Contracting with the California State Government

11 11 people viewed this event.

The State of California is one of the largest buyers of goods and services in the country, creating ongoing opportunities for small businesses across industries.

However, many businesses never pursue state contracts because the process can seem complicated or difficult to navigate. This workshop is designed to break things down in a clear, approachable way so you can better understand how to access and compete for state-level contracting opportunities.

We’ll walk through how state agencies source vendors, what different purchasing pathways look like, and what you need to know to start positioning your business for government work—whether you’re newly certified or just exploring this space for the first time.

By the end of the session, you’ll have a stronger understanding of how to navigate California’s procurement system and identify opportunities that align with your business.

This session will be led by Allisa Carr, Business Outreach Liaison with the California Department of General Services (DGS).

Topics covered include:

  • Overview of how California agencies purchase goods and services
  • Common contracting and purchasing methods
  • Leveraged Procurement Agreements (LPAs) explained
  • Different types of solicitations and how they work
  • What “Commercially Useful Function” (CUF) means
  • Tools and resources available for small businesses
